A new study shows that women taking Viagra are less likely to get any sort of sexual problems

The study, conducted at the University of Melbourne, found that women taking sildenafil (Viagra) had a lower risk of developing sexual problems compared to those who were not taking the drug.

“Our findings support the notion that erectile dysfunction is a common sexual problem,” said study leader Dr David Woodcock, lead author of the study.

Researchers from the University of Melbourne recruited around 40,000 women in five different cities and towns across Australia for the study.

The women, whose ages ranged from 29 to 59, were randomly assigned to take Viagra, with the drug being taken twice a day, for four to six weeks.

They were then assessed for sexual side effects, including difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection.

They were also asked to rate their sexual health on four domains, including a 5-point list of problems, a 4-point list of sexual problems and a 3-point list of problems for other sexual problems. They were also asked to rate their overall satisfaction with their sexual health.

The researchers found that those taking the drug were less likely to report sexual problems than those who were not.

Viagra also had fewer sexual side effects, which was thought to be due to the drug not being taken in a way that caused the sexual problems.

The study’s lead author, Dr Peter Green, said the drug had been designed to help people who didn’t respond well to treatment.

“In many ways Viagra is similar to a well-known class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors, a group of medications that have been used for many years to treat erectile dysfunction.”

The drug works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the penis when you get sexually excited and helping to relax the muscles in the penis to increase blood flow. A common side effect is a stiffening of the muscles in the penis, which makes it difficult to get or keep an erection.

The study also found that the drug did not affect the blood flow in the penis.

“It is important to note that the findings are only a small sample of the population studied in the study and it is important that further research is needed to determine the true impact of the drug on sexual health,” Green said.

Dr Woodcock, who led the study, said: “We are very excited about the results. This is the first to be published in a scientific journal and we’re looking forward to the findings from this study.”

Dr Woodcock, who is also the lead author on the research, said: “Our findings have important implications for anyone taking Viagra. These findings could be significant for many men who are struggling with erectile dysfunction and may wish to explore other treatment options.

“We believe that taking Viagra will be beneficial for many men who need a stronger erection but are unable to achieve it.

“This study is not a quick fix to sexual dysfunction and there is still more work to be done to develop a treatment for this.

“We hope that this study will inform men and their partners in the bedroom about what ED is and what the treatment options are, and help them make the best decision for their health and wellbeing.

Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.

Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.

US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.

The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.

“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”

Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency

But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.

It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.

‘Popular target’

The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.

“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.

“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”

Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.

“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.

“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”

This is some of the nation’s most popular erectile dysfunction medication

But many men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure (hepatotentiffiness) or those taking certain 'interacting medicines', will not need to see a doctor anymore. ( And it was not without a fight)

About 10 per cent of men aged 18 and over, are now given or sold "erectile dysfunction drugs", and are also trying them every day, without success, the Government has said.

Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will enable men who are eligible for the product a easier way to access the medication.
